English Tudor Home - Formal but not Stuffy

Our home is over 100 years old, not at all unusual for my area.  It was built to last with thick plaster walls, hand cut beams and slate for the roof.  We have large rooms with low ceilings and drafty windows made of iron that open out.  Our wood floors have patina overtime. Everyone comments on how beautiful they are. The front of our home is made from thick granite stones. The front door and library door reminds me of those heavy castle doors. I've added a few modern touches here and there.

Antique ~ English Tudor

Weeping cherry tree in full bloom.

Come on in and take the tour.

The walls and ceiling are painted linen white. The flash washed out the color.

I stenciled the walls a few years ago.

Our Living Room

A few changes are coming.
When is a room really ever finished?

 Night photo

The fireplace wall had paneling on it. I plastered over it with Ready Patch Spackling. We also replace the fireplace mantel and radiators covers.

Dining Room

10 chairs do seem like a lot. There are two leaves in the table. We could have had three. The furniture was all handmade. This was our first purchase when we bought the house. It took a year before all the pieces arrived.

Our sunroom is right off our dining room.

Sunroom - Family Room

Here I added a modern twist by painting the wicker chocolate brown and adding a seagrass rug.

The chocolate brown curtains also give a modern feel to the antique style wicker.

Kitchen - Pantry

This area was update including the chandelier.

I keep all my glassware here.

I bought two of these chandeliers.  The other one is now in my foyer.

Looking into the dining room from the kitchen.

Kitchen

The kitchen is being updated with a tin ceiling. The cabinets have been painted and the soffits have been removed. I also painted the wood door. Who says you can't paint wood.

 Library - Office

 My husband's office.
I hope it will soon be mine. I have so many plans for this room.

Master Bedroom

In our master bedroom I used modern prints above the bed. I also used modern pillows. The furniture is all antiques.

The chandelier matches the wall sconces.

Children's Rooms

The giraffe painting was mine when I was a child.  An artist painted it for me by the name of Harry Devlin (1918 - 2001)

My older boys love red and blue.

 Our Backyard

The patio is one of our favorite places to entertain.

Our yard is a nice retreat with plenty of trees for shade. Everything you see except the large trees were all done by us.

My children spend more time in the hammock than we do.

We added the fence, wood planter box, the antique bricks, stepping stones, etc.

I hope you enjoyed the tour. There will be many more changes and rooms to see.

Thanks for stopping by!

  4. Such a beautiful home! There's just so much quality & charm in an old home that you can't find as easily today.

You are so lucky to still have your slate roof! Ours was slate when we first bought our home, but it had to be replaced, which was heartbreaking. We still have the slate on the garage roof though.

  7. Dearest Dee,

Lovely home! You say drafty windows... are they not keeping you warm and comfy during winter time? So they are single windows than, no Thermopane windows. And what about your sun room? That would make quite a difference on energy bill use. You've done quite a job already and it is in fact a never ending project in- and around the home!
    Love to you,

    Mariette
