Shut The Front Door!

Let's start from the beginning shall we. It all started when I wanted to paint my staircase last year.

For some reason my husband could not see my vision right away. lol

Okay don't laugh too hard but this is what I showed him.

Do you remember I asked you if I should paint the staircase? Most of you agreed it needed something. It took me a year to get my husband on board. In the meantime I knew the rest of the hallway was overdue for some love.

I was determined to update the hallway. I first painted the mirror with homemade chalk paint and moved it to the wall facing the staircase. There was no stopping me.

It was time to tackle the table shelf on the other wall. If you remember I painted it with Annie Sloan chalk paint.

I love using creamy shades of white in a dark hall. This picture was taking without using the flash. You can see how dark my hall is at times.

I then stained the stair risers and side of the staircase a darker color.

My husband flipped. He hated it as I knew he would.
Was I bad for doing that?

Do you forgive me for torturing my husband?
He went into his office and found beautiful painted staircases.
He finally agreed the staircase would be gorgeous painted.

I went over the dark stain with primer. I never painted so fast in my entire life but I was excited.
My husband loved how much bigger and brighter the hallway was becoming. YA!
I now love the beautiful details of our wrought iron staircase.
It looks so fresh and new.

Here you can see I started to repair some cracks in the walls.

The new pantry door is in place but now covered by two larger coat doors. Yes you read that right.

All along I kept thinking about the tile in the front hall while working on the staircase.

(Before)

I knew the tile had to go! It was old, cracked, and dingy and not original to the house. The wood threshold that was there made us tripped over it almost daily.
What a job it was to remove the tile! The tile did not want to come up at all. It had a wire and concrete base. What a HUGE mess and at my front door! What was I thinking!!

Does it look like we jump from project to project in this old house? Absolutely!!!
One day they will all be done.
My MIL tells us we are wrecking the house.
Where is Norm Abram
from This Old House when we need him?
Maybe I should just clone my husband.
Is it only me who dreams about other projects while doing another one?

Thanks for stopping by!
XO,
Dee

  1. Wow, this looks great! I love the painted staircase! It looks so fresh and updated! Clearly, you are more than just a pretty face- tricking your husband! You're so clever! I do the same thing on projects- I have several going at once. I call our house "The Money Pit".

  2. Dearest Dee,
Wow, you have been beating quite some dust... and inhaling the fumes of paint.
BUT the staircase and your hallway look a lot better. Taking those tiles up will also make quite a difference once tackled. Hope your coats didn't get dust all over them...
    Hugs,
    Mariette

  18. love it. love it. I'd rather have everything torn up and looking like it's getting a make over than live with something I hate and think needs a makeover! I have big splotches of paint all over my master bathroom, which isn't unusual -- but it's been there for 8 months and the house is only 3 years old.

  19. I feel for you Dee. Even though our home is only ten years old you know that we have as many projects as you do since we were the contractors and are still working to finish it. I have to laugh at myself for thinking that as much as I loved the character of an old house I didn't want all the work that goes with them. I guess at least we don't have to demo first.
