How to Update an Old Table with Annie Sloan Chalk Paint

No need to always buy new furniture. One of the fastest and easiest ways to update what you already have is to use chalk paint. Even if you're a beginner at painting you will find chalk paint very easy to use on almost any surface. The best part is no priming is needed. You can paint a piece of furniture in minutes and it dries very quickly. You can wax with paste wax or bowling alley wax to give it a durable finish. I then like the distressed finish so I sand the furniture in certain places with 220 grit sandpaper and apply more wax to seal the finish. These finishes are so popular right now and look beautiful in any decor.

The Annie Sloan (Old White) chalk paint looks really pretty with Benjamin Moore
linen white on my walls. The two colors have brightened up my foyer and gave it a fresh new look.
The candle holders I received for Christmas. They are from wisteria.com.
I love looking through their catalog don't you?

I'm so happy I painted the mahogany table shelf with chalk paint. This wood is cheap mahogany so I did not feel guilty at all painting it. I couldn't wait to update it as you can see.  I put the partially painted table up just to see how it was looking. So far so good!

Next, I finished the painting, let it dry and applied a coat of TREWAX clear paste wax.

(Before Picture of Foyer)

The French gold mirror about the table shelf has now been moved to above the bench.

I also painted it with chalk paint and did the same treatment.

Horchow catalog has very similar mirrors that look almost like my chalk painted mirror.

You can see more of the mirror's update HERE

I painted the table shelf with two light coats of old white chalk paint. It took me no longer than a half hour between coats. Chalk paint dries really fast! I then waxed it the next day and sanded it pretty heavy. I wanted to bring out all the curves and carvings in the wood.

As you can see I've already started working on the staircase. I will be painted it Benjamin Moore linen white. It's a huge project that I hope to finish in the next couple of weeks.

I made these wood plaques with the woodworker's transfer tool.
I might make two more and put them above my newly painted table shelf.

The antique doily I bought in Upstate New York. I love it! I find it gives everything I put on it that extra charm.

My newly painted table shelf received many coats of TREWAX clear paste wax. I think at least (6) coats. I wanted it to shine and take center stage. I buffed it like crazy!

Are you in love with chalk paint as much as I am? Did you know you can also make your own chalk paint?

Before table at Christmas time decorated with a cloche.

After painted with candles holders from Wisteria.

I hope I've inspired you to update furniture in your home and make it look and feel new again.

Thanks for stopping by!

Dee

You are so good at refinishing and painting. I hear good things about chalk paint, and I've also heard negative things too. I need to try it myself. xo

Thanks for giving us the low-down. I never knew why that particular paint was so popular, but now I know. Perhaps I'll just paint something soon!

That will make a huge change in the entry. I used to have a mirror set similar to that. It was a gold color. You know, back in the day before I ever thought of painting something!

Dee, I have never tried chalk paint! But your little table project looks great, and so does the mirror. I'm in the process of deciding what color to paint our kitchen island, and I'm torn between pale aqua and ballet slipper pink. Which one would you choose?

Dearest Dee,
SO glad I can get into your blog without getting this malware warning! You must have found it and gotten rid of it.
This is a lovely makeover and your staircase will certainly make the hallway look lighter and roomier this way. A good thing that winter time gives us time to redo and decorate our homes! We're working on the office and guest bedroom closet. Dust for the time being...
Hugs to you,
Mariette

Your table looks great, Dee. Old white is one of my favorite whites. I envy you that you can paint your wood staircase. My husband will allow no paint on his wood. I'm sure your finished product will look fantastic.

You always inspire me Dee! That is one beautiful table makeover and I love it! I still have not done a furniture piece, but I swear I'm going to! I love the idea that I can use chalk paint and don't have to prime or sand. I'm still intimidated by the whole wax thing, I have no idea why!

Dee, this all looks spectacular! You have been so busy! I love the details in your table shelf! They just seem to pop since you painted the table. I love the transfer projects! They have always been a favorite of mine. You taught me about this great tool! I'm so happy with the projects I have completed with it. I am definitely a chalk painting fool! I love it! Your home is really looking great!
