Bedroom Dresser is Going Rustic

I'm still working on my son's room. The dresser was the next thing on my list that required updating. I wanted it to look more rustic. I sanded all the draws.........

and stained them with the apple cider vinegar and steel wool solution.

I primed and painted the drawer handles.
I used Rustoleum American Accents Metallic.

Before - painting the drawer handles.

The top and sides of the dresser are laminate. The next best thing to use
is gel stain. I applied two coats of the walnut gel stain.

I still need to sand the front of the dresser.

The wood drawers also got a quick wipe down in a few areas
 with Minwax special walnut.

So far so good. I love how the different stains make the drawers look old and rustic. I'm use to only doing this with paint. It's good to know that stain also works well. I love being able to see the grain of the wood.

It rained really hard this morning and it looks like the sun is coming back out. I'm off to hand sand the front of the dresser. I will post the updated dresser this week.

Thanks for stopping by!

Dee

I just got a really nice vintage 50's style dresser at a garage sale for only $5. So, all I need to get that finish is apple cider vinegar and steel wool? Does it take a lot of scrubbing? When you say laminate do you mean a wood laminate or was it formica? The top of the dresser I got if formica. I was thinking of either painting the rest of it and decoupaging the top with some book pages (it's in my closet so no one really sees it) But I also like this washed out look. Thanks for any advice. ♥

I've never heard of using apple cider vinegar for staining wood before...you learn something new everyday :). I like the way you used egg cartons to hold your drawer pulls in to paint them, thats a great idea too.

I'll be checking back to see how the dresser re-do turns out.

Another great project. You are such a wealth of information. Love how you used the egg cartons to work on the hardware. I didn't even know about those Minwax products either. How is the gel stain working out? I had a disaster last week.

Hi! Dee,
Oh I like that color of stain when you're done. It really looks great.
I didn't know you could change the shade of laminate. I don't know too much about staining.
It looks wonderful.

Isn't the ageing wood solution great? I am doing a small box for Hubby's Steampunk Study and posted a tutorial on the blog for a how-to. It's really made a big difference and now I'm applying the get stain, the grain shows through beautifully. It's a lovely technique and EASY and CHHEAP! (I love those words) It also means that when the drawers are open the inside of the drawers don't look so new. You've made these drawers look wonderful, Dee.

Dee, you're really doing an excellent job with this. I've heard of using cider vinegar for staining but I've never done it myself. I definitely like how nice the drawers turned out. I'm sure your son is going to appreciate the transformation. Great job!

So glad to hear someone using "old school" vinegar treatment with a steel wool. It looks great with the stain finishes and hope you will show it after you are completely through!

I have not tried the vinegar and wool trick. I may have to practice on some old scrap wood and see how it looks. I am loving the way your drawer looks with it though. Great..another thing to put on my 'try' list...lol.
